London, Baldwin & Cradock, c.1830. Hogarth's famous set, telling the story of a prostitute from her arrival in London, her heyday as a rich man's temperamental mistress to reduced circumstances, prison, illness and death. Two letterpress sheets explain many of the obscure references. A very decorative set.

Elevations of Savoy Hospital and Chapel
George Vertue.

London; Society of Antiquaries, 1753. Three views of the Savoy Hospital for the Poor, created by Henry VII in his will and opened 1512. The Chapel, illustrated at the bottom, is the only building to survive the demolition of the Hospital in the C19th. One of the final prints engraved by the prolific George Vertue (1684-1756) for the Society of Antiquaries's 'Vetusta Monumenta'.

Brunel's 'Monster Ship' the SS Great Eastern
Illustrated London News.

London: Illustrated London News, June 13th 1857. The iron sailing steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, built at Millwall, London, depicted in an artist's impression a year before her 1858 launch, when she was the largest ever ship. After her ill-fated maiden voyage, during which she was damaged by an explosion, she operated as a passenger liner between Britain and America before being converted to a cable-laying ship (laying the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866), before becoming a floating music hall. The Great Eastern was broken up in 1889.

An uncommon town plan of Palermo
Johannes Blaeu.

Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1705. An uncommon map-view of Palermo in Sicily, with an extensive 162-point key. In 1663 Johannes Blaeu published his three-volume 'Townbooks of Italy', with this map appearing in the third volume, which focused on the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. After Blaeu's death and the disastrous fire at his publishing house, the plates for the atlas were bought by Pierre Mortier, who added his own maps to the series and republished it as a four-volume set.
