| Jacobus Houbraken. George Byng Lord Torrington. £60.00 London, J. P. Knapton, 1747. Engraved portrait. 350 x 215mm. Half-length portrait of George Byng (1663-1733), Admiral of the Fleet, within an oval with a vignette of a sea battle beneath. It was engraved by Houbraken after the portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller. In 1707 Byng fought at the Battle of Toulon under Sir Cloudesley Shovell and survived the catastophic shipwreck off the Scilly Islands that drowned Shovell and 2,000 other sailors, prompting the Longitude Act. He was luckier than his son John, who was famously shot as a scapegoat for the loss of Minorca in 1756. Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) engraved a large series of portraits called 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain', published in parts between 1743 to 1752. HOUB0001
