London: Illustrated London News, June 13th 1857. Coloured wood engraving. Sheet 455 x 505mm. The iron sailing steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, built at Millwall, London, depicted in an artist's impression a year before her 1858 launch, when she was the largest ever ship. After her ill-fated maiden voyage, during which she was damaged by an explosion, she operated as a passenger liner between Britain and America before being converted to a cable-laying ship (laying the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866), before becoming a floating music hall. The Great Eastern was broken up in 1889.
