Early map of Rouffach in Alsace, France
Sebastian Munster

Basle, 1554. Rouffach, called Rubeaquum (red water) by the Romans. An episocopal fief of the Archbishop of Strasbourg at the time of publication, the city was destroyed by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), then captured by the French with the rest of Alsace. Under French rule it became important as a wine-growing centre.

Map of Corsica

Nuremberg, c.1735. Corsica, with a fine maritime cartouche. At the time of publication the island was controlled by the city-state Genoa, but the next year (1736) a German adventurer, Theodor Freiherr von Neuhoff, was crowned King of Corsica in an unsuccessful attempt at independence. Corsica remained under Genoese control until its purchase by France in 1768.
