Early Georgian miniature map of Northumberland
Early Georgian miniature map of NorthumberlandOwen & Bowen.
A Map of Northumberland.
£50.00
London, Thomas Bowles & Emanuel Bowen, 1720. 185 x 125mm. Coloured. Miniature map of the county from the first issue of 'Britannia Depicta', within a decorative border with a short descriptive text. On verso is a road map showing Burford in Oxfordshire and Stow in Gloucestershire.

Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Impov’d Being a Correct Coppy of Mr. Ogilby’s Actual Survey' was the first real travelling atlas, with the unwieldy folio volume of John Ogilby's road atlas reduced to a more manageable pocket size, with small but detailed county maps added. The maps were compiled and updated by John Owen and engraved by Emanuel Bowen. Hugely popular, the atlas was reissued for nearly fifty years.
