Antwerp, 1593, Italian text edition. 75 x 105mm. Ireland, orientated with north to the right, published in an official edition of Ortelius's 'Epitome' with an Italian text, not to be confused with the pirate editions published in Italy.
The 'Epitome Theatri Orteliani' was a pocket-sized edition of Ortelius's folio atlas, the 'Theatrum Orbis Terarum'. Marketed for travellers and students, the smaller format was very popular, and was translated into six European languages. There were also a number of pirate editions printed in Italy, the last published in 1724, nearly 150 years after the first edition.
This is a genuine antique print, published at or about the date specified, but guaranteed over 400 years old.
