Costumes des habitans de la Baie de Langle. £290.00 Paris, 1797. 390 x 560mm In 1785 Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741-88) was sent by the French to continue Cook's exploration work in the Pacific, in the ships 'Astrolabe' & 'Boussole'. This view shows his officers among the inhabitants of 'Langle Bay', which was named after La Perouse's second-in-command, Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle, who was killed on Samoa, December 1787. The site is probably Tomari Bay, Sakhalin.
