Early townplans of Galway, Dublin, Limerick & CorkBraun & Hogenberg.
Galwaye. Dubline. Lymericke. Corcke.
£1400.00
Cologne, 1617. 310 x 444mm. Coloured. Four early townplans with six costume vignettes, the Irish crest and a view of Enniskillen Castle down the sides, published in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum'.
All the illustrations have been copied from insets on John Speed's maps of the provinces of Ireland, showing the towns shortly after the end of the Nine Years' War (1594-1603). The Enniskillen Castle view shows it ias it was during the eight-day siege of 1594, prior to the rebuilding work of 1610.
The 'Civitatis Orbis Terrarum' was the first methodical series of town plans, issued in six volumes between 1572 & 1617. The plans were collected from different sources, resulting in a wide range of artistic styles, and were engraved by Franz Hogenberg, with a text edited by Georg Braun. Designed as a sister publication to the Ortelius atlas, the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', it included many of the earliest extant plans of many places, including London.
