Magini Iberia
Magini IberiaGiovanni Antonio Magini.
Tabula Europae II.
Venice, Galignani, 1598. 140 x 180mm. A map of Spain & Portugal after Claudius Prolemy of Alexandria, showing the peninsula as known to the Romans. It marks the Straits of Hercules.

Claudius Ptolemy (c. AD 90-168) , a Greco-Roman mathematician, astronomer, geographer and astrologer, lived in Aleandria in Egypt. His 'Geographia', a compilation of Roman knowledge of the world's geography, had been lost during the Dark Ages but recovered in the 1300s. The first book with printed maps was not an atlas but an edition of the 'Geographia', 1477.
