Basle, 1554. 265 x 350mm. Rouffach, called Rubeaquum (red water) by the Romans. An episocopal fief of the Archbishop of Strasbourg at the time of publication, the city was destroyed by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), then captured by the French with the rest of Alsace. Under French rule it became important as a wine-growing centre.
