Chart of the Le Maire Straits

Paris, c.1760. The Le Maire Straits were discovered in 1616, as the Dutch explorers Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten were attempting to find a better route from the Atlantic to the Pacific than the dangerous Magellan Straits. They discovered Cape Horn shortly afterwards.

Paris, c.1750. Showing globes, astrolabes and armillary spheres. The Peking Observatory was equipped by Ferdinand Verbiest, a Flemish Jesuit missionary in Peking in the late 1660s. Rather than building the latest models he worked from Tycho Brahe's 'Mechanica', published eighty years before.

Nieuhof describes the place: 'The place is small, but well-built, has a wealthy suburb, and drives a great trade. The revenue arising from the custom paid by vessels is very considerable'.
