The famous 'Saxon Heptarchy' map
The famous Johannes Jansson.
Britannia prout divisa suit temporibus Anglo-Saxonum præsertim durante illorum Heptarchia.
Amsterdam, c.1652. 425 x 530mm. Coloured. Split in lower centre fold margin, a few nicks in edges of margin, otherwise a very good example. The British Isles as divided into the seven Saxon kingdoms, between the withdrawal of the Romans and the Norman conquest. On each side of the map are seven vignette scenes: on the left are portraits of the first seven kings; and on the right are their successors' conversion to Christianity. A classic decorative map, with fine hand colour.
