London, J. P. Knapton, 1747. Engraved portrait. 350 x 215mm. Half-length portrait of Alexander Pope (1688-1744), poet and translator of classics, within an oval decorated with symbols of the Arts and a classical scene.
It was engraved by Houbraken after the portrait by Jean-Baptiste van Loo, with the decorations drawn by Arthur Pond.
Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) engraved a large series of portraits called 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain', published in parts between 1743 to 1752.
