Miniature map of Elizabethan England
Miniature map of Elizabethan EnglandAbraham Ortelius.
Anglia.
£195.00
Antwerp, 1601, Latin text edition. 85 x 120mm. Coloured. Miniature map of England and Wales, orientated with north to the right, with few placenames given, but including 'Londen', 'Oxfort', 'Cambrig', 'Lyrpol' & 'Caerlyl'.

The 'Epitome Theatri Orteliani' was a pocket-sized edition of Ortelius's folio atlas, the 'Theatrum Orbis Terarum'. Marketed for travellers and students, the smaller format was very popular, and was translated into six European languages. There were also a number of pirate editions printed in Italy, the last published in 1724, nearly 150 years after the first edition.
