Early Georgian miniature map of the British islands
Early Georgian miniature map of the British islandsOwen & Bowen.
The Smaller Islands in the British Ocean.
£60.00
London, Thomas Bowles & Emanuel Bowen, 1720. 185 x 125mm. Coloured. Miniature map of the Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and the Scilly Isles, from the first issue of 'Britannia Depicta', within a decorative border. On verso is a road map showing Shresbury and Welshpool.

Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Impov’d Being a Correct Coppy of Mr. Ogilby’s Actual Survey' was the first real travelling atlas, with the unwieldy folio volume of John Ogilby's road atlas reduced to a more manageable pocket size, with small but detailed county maps added. The maps were compiled and updated by John Owen and engraved by Emanuel Bowen. Hugely popular, the atlas was reissued for nearly fifty years.
